Proactive approach

Taipei Fubon Commercial Bank won key roles on corporate loans and sustainable financings in 2023, taking a proactive approach to manage rising interest rates and intense competition in Taiwan’s banking market.

The bank was one of the two mandated lead arrangers and bookrunners of a US$1.5bn three-year borrowing for Quanta Computer – the island’s largest corporate syndicated loan in 2023. The financing was increased in July from a US$880m target after a blowout response with 21 lenders joining in general syndication.

“We closed several jumbo and high-profile deals for our Taiwanese and overseas clients, which drew [an] overwhelming response from the syndication market amid a turbulent interest rate environment,” said Sheila Chuang, managing director and head of the institutional banking division at Taipei Fubon.

Even as interest rate hikes in the US pushed up funding costs for lenders and borrowers alike, Taipei Fubon persuaded Quanta to launch the US$1bn borrowing early in the year to lock in liquidity at banks that were hungry to book quality assets.

The bank took a similar approach on a US$500m-equivalent sustainability-linked loan for electronics manufacturer Wistron. As the sole bookrunner, it advised the borrower to include a NT dollar green portion for procuring renewable energy to encourage lenders to participate. The deal closed in March with 14 lenders joining in general syndication.

Following the success of Wistron’s borrowing, Taipei Fubon led another SLL for LCD maker Innolux, which carries both environmental, social and governance metrics and a green use of proceeds. That deal was increased to NT$40bn (US$1.26bn) after 14 banks joined during syndication, marking the largest SLL completed in Taiwan in 2023.

Taipei Fubon continued its commitment to the domestic renewable energy sector.

It was one of only two Taiwanese banks involved in the NT$117bn loan for the Hai Long Offshore Wind Project, the largest and longest-dated financing for the offshore wind sector in Taiwan. Taipei Fubon was an MLAB and acted as the local technical and environmental bank.

The bank also led Taiwan’s largest financing for a fishery-and-solar power project. The NT$15.8bn loan for SunnyRich Multifunction Solar Power drew 13 lenders in general syndication.

Elsewhere in Asia, Taipei Fubon was the most active in Vietnam, completing seven deals as a bookrunner in 2023. Those included Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank’s US$250m borrowing, Home Credit Vietnam Finance’s US$136m loan and Techcom Securities’ US$118m facility.

In India, Taipei Fubon was one of the two bookrunners for a US$1bn debut social loan for State Bank of India and gathered 15 Taiwanese lenders in the 22-bank syndicate.
