Citigroup's co-head of global mergers and acquisitions, Mark Shafir, is retiring from the bank after 15 years there.
Shafir has led Citi's M&A franchise since he joined the firm in 2008 and was most recently co-head of global M&A with Cary Kochman,
“(Shafir) has been one of the lead drivers of our M&A business and has played a central role developing the franchise, which grew significantly under his leadership,” said Citi’s investment banking group co-heads Tyler Dickson and Manuel Falco in a memo to staff, seen by IFR.
Shafir’s deal roster includes several blockbuster transactions, including Broadcom’s US$61bn acquisition of VMware, the nearly US$25bn merger of Kroger and Albertsons, LVMH’s US$16bn acquisition of Tiffany, and Dell Technologies’ US$67bn acquisition of EMC.
Shafir’s career spans more than 35 years, beginning at Goldman Sachs in 1985. He went on to hold leadership roles at several other investment banks, including Merrill Lynch and Lehman Brothers.
